A researchers' report highlights the significance of natural forest regeneration and refines estimates from previous international studies. During the study, data were collected for the Australian Government's greenhouse gas inventory programme. The data were also used to gain a better understanding of how to improve carbon sequestration by restoring degraded forest vegetation.

The study concludes that climatic conditions, rather than previous land use, are the most significant drivers of carbon sequestration volumes; it also concludes that specific criteria are needed to internationally assess the potential of forest restoration in influencing climate change.
