Cannot take, cannot return

In the first quarter of this year, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FID) has frozen potentially illegally obtained financial assets amounting to 159.8 million euros, which is four times more than in the first months of last year. Where might this preoccupation lead?

The NCBAF mechanism, recently introduced in Latvia, which allows law enforcement agencies to freeze various assets, can in simple terms be called an expropriation risk – that is, the possibility that the state could potentially take something away. As the volume of frozen assets in Latvia has grown rapidly over the years, and entrepreneurs are raising the alarm, Forbes decided to investigate whether there is cause for concern and what other countries are doing.
