Where Tanzania borders Kenya lies Natron, a lake whose waters are extremely salty and warm (even hot) compared to other lakes in the world. The waters of Natron warm up to as much as +50 °C. Once significantly larger, the lake is gradually evaporating. Currently, its depth is less than 3 m, with a length of about 57 km and a width of 22 km.

Surprisingly, life does exist in Natron – it is home to millions of flamingos. The lake is considered the most important breeding ground for the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) – up to 75% of the world's lesser flamingo population hatches here.
