By July 2020, the federal state of Lower Saxony in Germany had spent 3.4 million EUR on protecting sheep and goat herds from wolves, including the construction of protective fencing. In 2019, total costs for these purposes were approximately 732,000 EUR. The sharp rise in expenditure is due to the fact that, since last year, the federal state has taken full responsibility for all costs of protection measures; its authorities have already received 224 applications for protection measures in 2020, and it remains unknown how much these measures will cost Lower Saxony in the future.
