Phloeodes diabolicus, which could be translated into Latvian as the "diabolical ironclad beetle*" (there is no official scientific translation in Latvian yet), is found in western North America. The insect possesses almost supernatural abilities to withstand high pressure and powerful impacts. By studying the beetle using 3D scanning, it has been concluded that the structure of its wing casing makes the beetle nearly twice as durable as its closest "relatives". This circumstance has inspired engineers to work on creating more durable structures (designs).

The durability of Phloeodes diabolicus is considered exceptional. The approximately 2.5 cm long insect is "infamous" among insect collectors, as it is very difficult to attach to an exhibition board (pins usually get bent).
