Although five years ago, in February, a large number of us in Latvia voted for the preservation of the Latvian language as the only official state language, my subjective feelings, every time I visit my native land after a few months, make me shrink in unpleasant surprise at how the presence of the Russian language is growing in everyday life. It seems strange that we do not want to follow the laws we have accepted and approved ourselves in our daily lives, nor do we really demand it from service providers and those in power. Furthermore, this is happening directly contrary to the fact that the number of state language speakers in Latvia has been constantly growing and continues to grow over the last twenty years.

 

According to data from the Central Statistical Bureau, manufacturing output volumes in August 2023, compared to August 2022, were 3.8% lower than a year ago in both unadjusted and calendar-adjusted data. Overall, in the first eight months of the year, manufacturing production volumes were 6.3% lower than in the corresponding period a year ago.

 

Over the last six months, in discussions about Latvia's economic problems and challenges, the question of a lack of funding – and especially lending – has often been raised. Cleaning work on the Venta River in Kuldīga, carried out on behalf of the Nature Conservation Agency (the Agency), has concluded. As a result, river rapids have been restored over an area of more than six hectares, along a section of the Venta approximately three kilometres long on both sides of Kuldīga's old brick bridge. The completion of the work coincided with Kuldīga's inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This year, for the 12th time at the traditional Apple Festival, which will take place on 7 October at the Institute of Horticulture in Dobele, the highest award of the fruit-growing industry – the 'Apple Order' – will be presented. The award is given for high professional mastery that has contributed to the recognition and development of the industry. This year's recipient of the Apple Order is entrepreneur Gundega Sauškina, manager of SIA Very Berry, informs Inese Ebele, Director of the Institute of Horticulture.

It is set to become much more targeted, speaking to specific audiences. It is probably possible and necessary to improve – for example, by using less bureaucratic jargon and pretentious foreign words. However, there is one significant problem.
