Ilze Ozola, a representative of the Latvian National Peat Association, stated that peat is a renewable resource; for instance, the peat layer in the Teiči bog increases by four millimetres per year, contrary to the generally accepted rate of one millimetre per year.

Furthermore, I. Ozola explained that the extraction of energy peat should not involve new or already overgrown bogs, but is most efficiently carried out in existing peat bogs where the top layer of light peat has already been harvested.
