Latvia believes that agricultural and forestry methods particularly favourable to local conditions for reducing GHG emissions and increasing carbon sequestration include afforestation and agroforestry, as forests create an increase in carbon stock through both living and dead biomass. Furthermore, these goals will be supported by organic farming, catch crops and under-sown crops used as green manure, thereby increasing soil organic carbon content and promoting the growth of biodiversity, among other methods.
Ministry of Agriculture State Secretary Raivis Kronbergs emphasised at the council: “At the same time, we continue to point out that the primary goal of agriculture must be the production of agricultural products, in order to ensure that the population is supplied daily with safe and high-quality food in a wide range at competitive prices.”
