On 2 May 2023, the supervisory board of a/s “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) decided that three members of the LVM board – Jānis Lapiņš, Toms Reiziņš, and Jānis Stankevičs – had lost the confidence of the board, as they were unable to demonstrate unified and cohesive mutual cooperation, thereby posing risks to the company's good corporate governance, security, and development. Following this decision, the LVM temporary supervisory board immediately dismissed these members of the company's board.

Pēters Putniņš will continue to lead the LVM board. To ensure the continuity of the company's operations, the LVM temporary supervisory board has elected four temporary board members from among the company's employees: Valdis Kalns, Māris Kuzmins, Dainis Reķelis, and Ieva Rovi.

At the same time, the nomination process for four permanent board members of a/s “Latvijas valsts meži” has been initiated. In accordance with the requirements of the Law on Governance of Capital Shares of a Public Person and Capital Companies, the temporary members of the LVM board have been elected for a specified term, until the nomination process for the new company board is concluded, but for no longer than one year.

Chair of the LVM temporary supervisory board Zane Drinķe emphasises: “I expect the company to demonstrate strength and resilience, regaining the trust of the public and the forestry sector in the company by implementing the sustainable, efficient, and socially responsible management of the strategic assets at the company's disposal – land, forests, subsoil, and other resources. The existing board chair is joined by experienced forestry professionals from within the company who possess the necessary qualifications and experience to ensure the continuity of LVM's operations and its modern development in accordance with the principles of good corporate governance.”

Deputy Chair of the LVM temporary supervisory board Mārtiņš Līdums explains: “Russia’s war in Ukraine, which began last February, has had a rapid and unpredictable impact not only on the world and Latvia, but also on the forestry sector; therefore, it is vital that “Latvijas valsts meži” regains its role as a sector leader and acts as a stable support for the development of the entire industry during these challenging times. At present, national security issues are particularly relevant. The LVM board must immediately take responsibility to ensure the future development of the company and forestry. The goals are challenging – in terms of restoring the company's reputation, increasing forest productivity, carbon sequestration, and the innovative development of the company based on the latest scientific achievements. Simultaneously, the LVM temporary supervisory board has already decided today to begin the nomination process to ensure a clear and transparent selection and election of four permanent board members for the company.”
