Over the past few months, Swedish politicians, athletes and artists have made pledges and sworn off flying - that is, no longer travelling by aircraft.

Swedes are diligent about sorting waste, heating their homes with firewood and cycling, but they are happy to spend their holidays and time off in warmer climes. Looking at the statistics, Swedes use air transport on average five times more often than the "average citizen of the world".

Former medical student Maja decided: "I won't fly! But I won't tell anyone - I'll just not fly!" In January 2018, the young lady changed her strategy, starting the "We Stay on the Ground" campaign on Facebook with a neighbour. The goal of the campaign was to get 100,000 people to pledge not to fly for the coming year.

In March 2019, the newspaper "Dagens Nyheter" published a review concluding that "creating feelings of guilt has had consequences." Over the course of the year, Swedes have shared fewer photos from their holidays on social media. This topic has become almost undesirable or forbidden; for example, it is certainly not advisable to publicly discuss visiting Thailand.
