The project will improve the nature conservation system in Latvia to ensure the long-term preservation of protected species and habitats. During the project, it is planned to develop innovative and appropriate approaches to solving current nature conservation issues and to implement the prioritised action framework for Natura 2000 areas.

Three pilot themes have been selected for the project: EU-protected grasslands, EU-protected forests, and the control of invasive or non-native species. Furthermore, to promote the preservation of biodiversity on private land, the project intends to create specific support mechanisms, including the development of an effective national-level compensation model.

Project implementation period: 1 August 2020 – 31 December 2028

Budget: €19.49 million (of which €11,690,504 is EU co-financing, funded by the European Union’s LIFE Environment programme, and €7,793,669 is national co-financing provided by the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund of the State Regional Development Agency and the project partners' own contributions).

Partnership: The project is implemented by ten organisations representing both the public and non-governmental sectors, as well as scientific institutions. The lead partner of the project is the Nature Conservation Agency.
