Only 8% of rivers in Zemgale are of good ecological quality

Experts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC), together with partners, have surveyed and mapped the Auce River. It has been concluded that the river has poor hydromorphological quality, with various types of dams observable along its entire length. The work was carried out as part of the LIFE project “Implementation of River Basin Management Plans of Latvia towards Good Surface Water Status” (LIFE GOODWATER IP).

Information on the ecological state of the Auce River was presented at a seminar held in Dobele, attended by environmental specialists, landowners of areas adjacent to the Auce River, municipal employees, and other interested parties. The Auce River is part of the Lielupe River basin, and the most significant challenges are impacts from historical hydromorphological modifications – the straightening and impounding of the river, which have altered its natural regime, as well as the inflow of nutrients – nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. The river's flow is also restricted by beaver-built dams; however, human activity has also played a part through the creation of stone mounds, which limit the continuity of the river's flow.

Overall, in the Lielupe River basin area, which is located in the central part of Latvia, only 8% of rivers are of good ecological quality. The ecological quality of rivers is assessed by taking into account physical-chemical, biological, and hydromorphological quality. (...)
