In order to clarify and characterise the population dynamics of Latvian wolves and lynxes in relation to the conservation and management measures for these species, as well as to analyse wolf attacks on livestock in connection with regional characteristics of the wolf population's demographic structure, the Hunting and Fauna Management division of the LVMI "Silava" began implementation in January 2020 of the postdoctoral research project by researcher Jurģis Šuba, "Population dynamics of grey wolves Canis lupus and Eurasian lynxes Lynx lynx in Latvia and identification of conflict risks in the livestock sector" (No. 1.1.1.2/VIAA/3/19/511). The research is funded by the European Regional Development Fund under the "Growth and Employment" programme, specific support objective 1.1.1. "To increase the research and innovation capacity of Latvian scientific institutions and the ability to attract external funding by investing in human resources and infrastructure", measure 1.1.1.2. "Post-doctoral research support".
A study conducted within the framework of the post-doctoral research application on the demographics of the Latvian wolf subpopulation has been published in the international scientific open-access journal Sustainability. The article examines the dynamics of the population structure over the last 20 years and the differences in the assessment of hunting impacts for various gender and age groups.
