On 7 November, Jaunkalsnava hosted the Forest Science Day “Forests and forestry in a changing climate”, organised by LVMI "Silava" in collaboration with JSC "Latvijas valsts meži", the Forest Research Station (MPS), the Faculty of Forestry and the Latvian Academy of Agricultural and Forest Sciences.
At the opening of the Forest Science Day, Jurģis Jansons, Director of LVMI "Silava", and Ojārs Spārītis, President of the LZA, emphasised the need to assess the situation in a changing climate scientifically, to seek potential benefits, and to avoid loud, empty words and hysteria. J. Jansons announced the intention to compile and publish the "collected works" of Prof. K. Bušs (as understood by foresters) by the end of the year and, before the year is out, to jointly award the K. Bušs Prize to a forest scientist together with the Academy of Sciences.
Following this, participants at the Forest Science Day heard information presented in three sessions: "LSM research and action for adapting forestry to climate change" (Indulis Brauners), "The impact of climate on tree growth" (Āris Jansons), and "The impact of climate on dendrophagous insects" (Ingars Siliņš).
At three experimental sites in the Kalsnava forest district of the MPS, Forest Science Day participants were introduced to the researchers' findings in the following studies: "Changes in the distribution range of tree species, species adaptation - risks and opportunities" (Āris Jansons), "Wind damage risks and their assessment/prevention, interaction of risks" (Āris Jansons, Oskars Krišāns), and "Increasing forest stand productivity: risk mitigation, improving tree growth conditions" (Dagnija Lazdiņa).
