According to Finnish statistics, in 2021, 86% of the total electricity produced in Finland came from non-fossil energy sources, which is a record high since the beginning of the millennium. The remaining 14% of electricity was produced from peat and fossil energy sources.

The volume of electricity produced from renewable energy sources increased by six percent compared to the previous year, reaching 69.3 terawatt-hours, mainly because wood fuels are increasingly being used in electricity production. Electricity produced from renewable energy sources accounted for 53%, and nuclear energy for 33%, of the total volume of electricity produced in the country.

The volume of electricity produced from peat and fossil sources increased by three percent compared to the previous year, accounting for 14% of the total electricity produced.

In total, 69.3 terawatt-hours of electricity were produced in Finland in 2021, which is four percent more than in 2020. Due to an unusually cold winter, district heat production increased by 16%.
