How to ensure the conservation of ecosystems in your immediate vicinity? Advice for residents in Western countries

In Latvia, we have talked a lot and continue to talk (as well as work) about ecosystems, their conservation, and the services they provide. When reading various foreign – in this case, Western – sources and summarising the advice provided in them, we can observe a slightly different approach and what are known as “modern trends”. In Latvia, ecosystems and biodiversity are, of course, in a much better state than in the so-called “Old Europe”. Therefore, it is interesting to see what is recommended in the West for the conservation and further maintenance of ecosystems.

As is known, an ecosystem is a fragile balance between various living organisms and the surrounding environment, which sustains life on Earth. Preserving and maintaining ecosystems is crucial for both nature and the well-being of human society. We can preserve and improve local ecosystems through active measures. In this article, we will examine effective ways to conserve ecosystems in our immediate surroundings and protect the environment.

Maintaining a healthy ecosystem is vital for environmental sustainability and general well-being. It ensures continued ecosystem productivity and resilience, providing essential services such as clean air, fresh water, and food. By actively engaging in ecosystem management and conservation, we can have a positive impact on our immediate surroundings and contribute to the broader goal of preserving biodiversity globally.

Understanding ecosystems

Before it becomes clear what we can do to conserve ecosystems, it is important to understand what ecosystems are and how they function. Ecosystems are complex networks of living organisms, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, that interact with their physical environment. These interactions form a web of interdependence that sustains life and maintains the balance of nature. By understanding the interconnectedness of species and the environment, we can appreciate the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems.

The importance of ecosystem conservation

Conserving ecosystems is important for several reasons. Firstly, healthy ecosystems promote biodiversity, which is essential for the survival of various species and general ecosystem stability. Biodiversity ensures ecosystem resilience against disturbances and adaptation to environmental changes. Furthermore, ecosystems provide valuable ecosystem services, such as pollination, nutrient cycling, and water purification. By maintaining ecosystems, we safeguard these services and contribute to a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.

There are 8 simple ways to maintain ecosystems in your immediate vicinity.

1. Promote biodiversity in your immediate vicinity

One of the main ways to conserve ecosystems is to promote biodiversity in the immediate area. Biodiversity is the variety of species, genes, and ecosystems found in a given area. Biodiversity can be supported by:

### Planting native species: when landscaping your surroundings, choose native plants. Native plants provide food and habitat for local wildlife, and the plants are suited to the local climate and soil conditions.

### Creating wildlife-friendly spaces: install bird feeders, bird boxes, and nesting sites for wild species. Create water sources, such as bird baths and small ponds, to attract various local bird species.

### Avoiding the use of pesticides: reduce the use of pesticides or avoid them altogether. Pesticides can harm beneficial insects and disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

2. Conserving water resources

Water is a vital resource for all living organisms, and conserving its resources is crucial for the maintenance of ecosystems. Here are a few ways you can save water:

### Prevent water leaks: check and repair faulty plumbing fixtures, and eliminate water loss in irrigation systems. Even a small leak over time can result in a significant amount of water lost.

### Efficient water use in landscaping: use drought-resistant plants and consider installing a rainwater harvesting system to collect and use rainwater for irrigation.

### Responsible water consumption: it is necessary to be mindful of water consumption habits. Promote efficient water use at home or work, turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, use less water in the shower, avoid “over-watering” gardens, and use shorter wash cycles in washing machines.

3. Proper waste management

Western countries emphasise that effective waste management is crucial to prevent pollution and keep the environment clean. It must be admitted that in the West, they are dealing with this problem more successfully than, for example, in the Balkans, not to mention Africa, Asia, or South America…

The following waste management techniques should be considered:

### Reduce, reuse, recycle: use the 3R principle (the so-called 3Rs principle, in English – reducing waste, reusing and recycling resources and products) by reducing waste generation, using items for as long as possible or reusing them, and recycling paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

### Composting: compost organic waste, such as food scraps and plant debris from your garden. Composting reduces the amount of waste and also provides nutrient-rich soil for the garden.

### Responsible disposal: dispose of hazardous items, such as batteries and chemicals, at designated collection points to prevent environmental pollution.

4. Support for local environmental organisations...

...is emphasised as essential in ecosystem conservation. Of course, one can agree, but it is necessary to clearly distinguish between the ideology, approach to problem-solving, and forms of operation of environmental (or “green”) organisations. Collaborating with local environmental organisations is said to be the most effective way to promote ecosystem conservation. These organisations work on environmental conservation efforts, promote awareness, and implement initiatives to protect and restore ecosystems. They can be supported by taking the following steps:

### Volunteering: offer your skills, time, or resources to local environment-related organisations. They often organise events, campaigns, and various projects that rely on public participation.

### Donating or fundraising: financial contributions help eco-friendly organisations continue their work. Consider donating or organising fundraising events to support such initiatives. Businesses can also invest in green initiatives, helping the environment while improving their reputation and sustainability.

5. Involvement in restoration projects

Participating in ecosystem restoration projects can facilitate the recovery of degraded habitats. The goal of restoration projects is to improve ecological integrity and enhance the well-being of both ecosystems and local communities. Some restoration project opportunities include:

### Tree planting: join tree-planting events in your area or sign up for tree-planting initiatives that “plant” trees on your behalf, especially in areas affected by deforestation or habitat loss. Trees play a vital role in carbon sequestration and provide habitats for various species.

### Community garden projects: involvement in community garden initiatives for the restoration and revitalisation of urban green spaces. These projects provide an opportunity for people to come together and tend gardens, promoting biodiversity and food production, and creating green oases in urban areas.

### Forest restoration: participate in reforestation efforts to revitalise and protect forests. Forests are biodiversity “hotspots” that provide valuable services, such as water filtration and flood mitigation.

6. Education and awareness-raising

This issue, viewed from our (Latvian forestry and related sectors) perspective, is the most important. In building awareness about nature conservation, an extremely biased, scientifically unfounded, and one-sided approach is also very often used here in Latvia. Information is spread in the form of claims about “deforestation”, “destruction of nature”, and “poisoning the countryside”. Unfortunately, this creates a false impression of the real situation and undermines the image of Latvia as a nature-friendly country. We know that in the Nordic countries and the Baltics, biodiversity and sustainable forest management are at a high level – which cannot be said for “Old Europe”.

That is why such recommendations (which, of course, are good if the approach is objective) are given to people in Western countries! Education and awareness-raising are crucial for ecosystem conservation. By educating yourself and others, you can promote a sense of responsibility and inspire action. Consider the following issues:

### Stay informed: keep yourself informed about environmental issues, conservation practices, and scientific advancements related to ecosystems. Subscribe to news about the relevant industry.

### Share knowledge: inform your employees, colleagues, family members, friends, and the public about the importance of ecosystem conservation and the steps they can take.

### Get involved in environmental education programmes: support or participate in local environmental education initiatives that promote ecological literacy and provide training to local communities on issues such as sustainable forestry and agriculture.

7. Nature conservation

The protection of wildlife and plants is an integral part of ecosystem conservation. Each species contributes to the balance and functionality of the ecosystem. What we can do:

### Protect habitats: avoid visiting (disturbing) or destroying habitats, especially during nesting or breeding seasons. Support wildlife conservation projects.

### Prevent wildlife trafficking: report any cases of illegal wildlife trade or poaching to the relevant authorities.

### Do not support the exploitation of wild animals, for example, object to the presence of zoos near motorways, the use of wild animals in circuses, and the taming and keeping of wild animal offspring in captivity under unsuitable conditions.

### Promote responsible pet ownership: ensure that pets do not harm wild animals and do not disturb them in their habitats.

8. Sustainable land-use practices

Practicing sustainable land use is essential for ecosystem conservation. Consider the following sustainable land-use practices:

### Sustainable forestry and agriculture: use sustainable forestry and farming methods on your property, and support local farmers and foresters who practice sustainable land management and forestry methods that prioritise soil health, biodiversity, and the sustainable use of water resources.

### Responsible management: promote responsible land management that minimises habitat destruction and prioritises protected areas.

### Land restoration: promote land restoration efforts in degraded areas, such as reforestation, afforestation, soil rehabilitation, and habitat restoration.

A call to action to protect the environment around you.

Conserving ecosystems in your immediate vicinity is a collective responsibility that requires both individual and local community (joint) action. By promoting biodiversity, saving water, managing waste responsibly, supporting local organisations, getting involved in environmental restoration projects, educating and raising awareness, protecting wildlife, and practicing sustainable land use, you can contribute to the preservation and improvement of local ecosystems. Therefore, one must act actively now to ensure a sustainable and thriving environment for future generations.

It is emphasised that the commitment to protect nature and promote biodiversity will continue to be a driving force for the European Union's value proposition and will contribute to a sustainable future for all… Therefore, there is a commitment to promote biodiversity and its conservation by implementing nature projects and tree-planting initiatives. In Western countries, projects are designed to promote the development of healthy and thriving ecosystems, and cooperation with farmers, landowners, forest owners, and nature conservation organisations is being activated to implement this. By working together and taking action in your local area, it will be possible to ensure a biodiverse and healthy world. Citizen communities can influence and foster a greener and more sustainable future for all.

Everything is correct and beautiful, however, it must be admitted that “implementation” and “ensuring a thriving environment for the future” in the developed Western countries are not going very well. The global situation and geopolitical circumstances force the use of both existing and newly discovered fossil resource extraction sites, the burning of coal, the use of natural gas, the construction of massive building projects, and the development of heavy industry, etc. The measures planned by the European Green Deal are often in contradiction with what is realistically achievable even in Western countries, which is why there is a desire to disproportionately shift self-imposed environmental targets to Northern and North-Eastern Europe. Western countries are failing to provide 30% of their territory for nature protection, as required by EU nature conservation legislation. It is also not going so easily with carbon sequestration. In turn, this can be done by imposing various burdens on forest-rich countries in the Baltic Sea region, in the North and East of the European Union. One must also take into account the practically unachievable plans that would have to be fulfilled by the rest of the world – Asia, Africa, and America. There, environmental pollution, geopolitical threats, waste management, and problems with access to drinking water and food are only growing and growing, as is the population – with the corresponding consequences. We will see how everything moves forward. To keep living, hope for a “brighter future” is always necessary…
