On 22 and 23 March, a meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) took place, where member states continued intensive discussions on significant legislative conditions for the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) which will be in force from 2023 to 2027, but on which it has unfortunately not yet been possible to reach an agreement with the European Parliament (EP). Due to the prolonged discussions, the CAP transition period conditions are in effect from 2021 to 2023.
At the AGRIFISH meeting on 19 and 20 October 2020, a common Council position was reached on the future operation of the CAP, which gives the Council a political mandate to continue negotiations with the EP in order to finally reach a final agreement on the future CAP. Very intensive work has been carried out with the EP so far, but the negotiations are complex because the institutions have different or even opposing positions on several key CAP issues. The EP has also put forward several new proposals on which the Council still needs to reach an agreement between member states.
