Estonia is still in the process of clarifying its position on the recent European Commission proposal for the whole of Europe to switch to the standard European railway gauge. Estonia's decision will also depend on the stances of Latvia and Lithuania, a representative of the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications announced on 3 August. All the Baltic states and Finland currently use the so-called Russian railway gauge of 1520 millimetres (in Finland – 1524 millimetres). The most common railway gauge in Europe, as recommended by the European Commission, is the European or standard gauge of 1435 millimetres.

The Director of the Transport Development and Investment Department at the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Indrek Gailan (Indrek Gailan), speaking on the Vikerraadio programme "Uudis+", said that the goal behind the EC proposal is to isolate Russia and Belarus from the European transport network (TEN-T) by integrating Ukraine and Moldova into it instead.

I. Gailan stated that discussions with the Commission will begin this autumn and that work on developing Estonia's position on this issue has already commenced. However, beforehand, Estonia must also discuss the matter with Latvia and Lithuania. "...because it would not be a good idea to develop a 1435-millimetre railway only in Estonia," said Indrek Gailan.
