At present, the property manager is the former Privatisation Agency, or Possessor, which allocates 13,000 euros per year for maintenance. Most of this is received by “Bolderājas grupa” for various works and organising clean-up events, yet it is beyond the power of local activists to protect the fortress structures from the ravages of time: “The bell tower of the Daugavgrīva Fortress Orthodox church, which later became a water tower, the sun wall of the Swedish barracks, the roof of the powder tower, and the fortress gates – all of these urgently need a roof and equally urgent strengthening, especially the powder tower, from which stones are simply starting to fall freely. Especially in the spring,” admits Sandra Jakušonoka.
