The Cabinet of Ministers has approved regulations prepared by VARAM, which provide for 17.48 million euros of investment in the development of waste management systems, including funding for increasing the capacity for anaerobic processing of biodegradable waste (BNA) in Latvia. As a result of these investments, the total BNA processing capacity in Latvia will increase by 51,000 tonnes per year, while simultaneously promoting the achievement of the objectives set out in EU waste management directives, particularly regarding BNA, as well as reducing the volume of waste sent to landfills.
Latvia's waste management goals involve promoting recycling and preparation for reuse so that resources (in this case, recycled waste) are returned to the economic cycle as much as possible. A major obstacle to successful waste recycling caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is that the demand for waste as a raw material for recycling has fallen sharply abroad. Therefore, it is necessary to promote the stabilisation of the waste recycling market and ensure that the processing of essential waste streams can take place in full capacity right here in Latvia.
