The industry

As president of the Latvian Timber Producers and Traders Association, I express the highest recognition to Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze for his ability to look deeply into the situation and assess its impact on the national economy, but even more so for his courage...

The plan is the first integrated forest management document of this scale in Latvia. It brings economic, ecological and social objectives together in a single framework, ensuring a balanced approach – from timber harvesting and the conservation of biological diversity to carbon sequestration, recreational opportunities and the protection of cultural and historical values.

In order to assess objectively the climate impact of various building materials and to justify their use in construction, including in public procurement, a common approach to calculating the emissions of buildings across their entire life cycle is needed.

In total, almost 30 million selectively bred forest tree seedlings of various species were planted in the state forests this year. The most widely planted was pine – 17 million seedlings, followed by spruce with 8.6 million seedlings, with birch third by quantity at 3.3 million seedlings.

Forest roads are human-made, yet ecologically very significant structures.

Preserving spruce is said to be a particularly great challenge at present, when large areas of spruce have been destroyed by an outbreak of the eight-toothed spruce bark beetle, both in the Riga region and elsewhere in Latvia. The regeneration and tending of spruce stands so that they are resilient both to pests and to climate change is becoming ever more topical.

Miscellaneous

All the same, I then expect the greens' political opponents to come forward with a clear proposal for how we are to address the tasks outlined in this text and many others besides. If there is no such proposal, then it is dishonest on the part of the politicians and thoughtless on the part of their supporters. We reject something because we do not like it, yet we do not want to think about the consequences of that rejection.
