On 2 February, World Wetlands Day, the Nature Conservation Agency (the Agency) is launching a month-long series of events that will raise awareness of the vital importance of wetlands in mitigating climate change and allow people to become part of the wetland conservation process. With this year’s World Wetlands Day theme – it is time to restore wetlands – everyone is invited to participate and actively engage in restoration work now.

Each year, a specific theme is chosen for Wetlands Day. This year, the focus is on the urgent need to act and restore wetlands globally, as more than 35% of the world's wetlands have disappeared over the last 50 years, with the rate of loss being three times faster than that of forests.

As a result of climate change, World Wetlands Day is being marked increasingly widely. To raise public awareness about wetlands in Latvia and encourage participation in their conservation, the Agency is offering a diverse range of activities throughout February dedicated to this valuable ecosystem.
