In a letter to the President of Latvia Egils Levits, Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš, Minister of Agriculture Kaspars Gerhards, Minister of Economics Jānis Vitenbergs, the Latvian Forest Industry Federation, and AS “Latvijas valsts meži”, entrepreneurs are calling on politicians to recognise the role of the national timber industry in regional economies and job creation, and therefore to avoid hasty decisions that could lead to a significant decline in national production and an increase in unemployment across the country.

Entrepreneurs are calling for an end to the efforts of recent months to push through fundamental and irreversibly negative changes to the timber industry, which is one of the most stable and significant sectors of the Latvian economy. Pressure is currently being applied to the board of Latvia's largest forest owner, AS “Latvijas valsts meži”, to change the existing timber sales principles, allowing foreign buyers to purchase raw wood materials and sawlogs without local processing facilities. By thoughtlessly changing the existing conditions for timber sales, preference could be given to buyers from other countries, such as China, where they receive significant state support.
