In recent years, timber houses have become more popular among private individuals, yet it cannot be said that timber construction is currently experiencing a boom in Latvia. Kristaps Ceplis, Executive Director of the Latvian Timber Construction Cluster, points out that timber construction has always been relevant in Latvia, although the emphasis shifted following the industrial revolution which brought new building materials. Furthermore, forest areas were once smaller than they are today. Now, timber construction is popular and is strengthening its position in many parts of the world, and Latvia is keen to follow these trends.

According to the data available to him, there are likely around 100 timber house or timber structure manufacturers in Latvia. "There has indeed been an upswing in recent years. Many villages around Riga are essentially made up of timber houses, and often the buyers themselves do not even realise that the structure is made of wood," says K. Ceplis.
