Undoubtedly! Home life shapes the Finnish sense of happiness

According to data from the "Happiness at Home" survey conducted by Asuntosäätiö (The Housing Foundation), a person's home has the greatest impact on their happiness, alongside health and relationships. Data from the recent survey shows that the overall sense of happiness among Finns has declined, and the emotions experienced at home have shifted.

Saturday, 8 October, marks National Home Day – a time to emphasise the importance of the home during challenging times.

For the second time, the Asuntosäätiö "Happiness at Home" survey has examined the state of happiness among Finns and the significance of the home. The results indicate that homes are directly linked to happiness. The home was identified as the second most important source of happiness, immediately after health. Compared to last year, the importance of health has decreased slightly as the coronavirus pandemic has subsided.

The general happiness barometer in Finland remains high, with nearly three out of four respondents stating they are satisfied with their lives. However, compared to last year's "Happiness at Home" survey, the happiness levels of Finns have fallen.

A sense of peace, happiness, and joy is experienced most in the home. Compared to last year, positive feelings are being experienced slightly less, while signs of anxiety, depression, and insecurity have become more common. Feelings of loneliness have also increased.

"The survey shows that world events also affect Finnish homes. The home is an indispensably important and safe refuge in uncertain times," says Johanna Otranen, Head of Communications and Marketing at Asuntosäätiö.

A sense of community increases happiness

Although a convincing majority of Finns (71%) state that they feel best when alone or with their family, the "Happiness at Home" survey suggests that the local community is also an essential source of happiness.

"According to the survey data, members of communities are clearly happier than others. All types of communities increase the sense of happiness, from neighbourhood groups to hobby clubs, sports clubs, and ideological organisations. The "Happiness at Home" survey data suggests that Saturday is the favourite day for Finns. Saturdays are also when we typically spend the most time at home. The importance of the home in life is undeniable, which is why it deserves its own celebratory day. Home Day can be celebrated simply at home – enjoy the peace or have a coffee with a neighbour. You can share your celebrations on social media using the hashtag #kodinpäivä," notes Johanna Otranen.

For the second time, the Asuntosäätiö "Happiness at Home" survey explored sources of happiness in Finland, with a particular focus on the role of the home. The "Happiness at Home" survey, conducted in August 2022, involved 1,068 respondents representing the Finnish population aged 18 to 69.
