In 2020, the world produced 4,165 million metric tonnes of oil. The African continent was responsible for the extraction of 327.3 million tonnes, placing it fifth in the world behind the Middle East, North America, the CIS, and the Asia-Pacific region, including China. As the chart shows, Africa's oil extraction sites are primarily located in
countries bordering the ocean. Nigeria holds the top spot among African countries in terms of production volume.
According to data from the annual report, the West African nation produced more than a quarter of the entire continent's oil output, specifically 86.9 million tonnes.
