A study by the Swedish car manufacturer "Volvo Motors" indicates that the production of the 100% electric SUV "Volvo C40 Recharge" generates 70 per cent more harmful emissions than the production of the same "XC40" model with an internal combustion engine. However, when taking into account the pollution generated during the vehicle's operation, after more than 100,000 kilometres driven, the electric and internal combustion engine cars reach parity in their "carbon footprint".

"Volvo" notes that the parity of environmental pollution between the electric and internal combustion engine versions is reached depending on how the electricity is generated. If the calculation takes into account the global average pollution generated in electricity production, the "Volvo C40 Recharge" must be driven for 109,918 kilometres before it reaches parity in its "carbon footprint" with the internal combustion engine version of the "Volvo XC40" SUV. This is therefore more than half of the manufacturer's expected vehicle lifecycle. However, even over its entire lifespan up to a mileage of 200,000 kilometres, an electric vehicle will have generated 15 per cent less pollution than its fossil-fuelled equivalent.
