Do you often use the word “sustainability” in your daily life and work?
When looking at the conservation of biodiversity as a process, the word or term “sustainability” is undoubtedly used quite often. Today, there are many ecosystems in which without sustainable management and stewardship, it is impossible to ensure biodiversity. Regarding the meaning and understanding of this word, it is clear that also students at Daugavpils University, upon starting their studies, are not hearing this word for the first time. By sustainability we understand harmony between nature and humanity with its various interests. Nowadays, when talking about preserving biodiversity, a fair number of knowledgeable experts believe that for the conservation of a large proportion of species and habitats, complete non-interference (doing nothing) is not the solution: many species and habitats require specific conditions where human-defined activity (including economic) or intervention is necessary. Such measures are also being implemented in many places in Latvia, for example, various management activities to ensure the protection of species and habitats. Most of these measures are financed from the European Union budget, without affecting Latvian finances.
