SIA “Laflora” has signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Latvia (LU) on measuring carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in peat extraction fields using a new-generation eddy covariance monitoring device, the first device of its kind in the world. This method provides direct and continuous measurements of CO₂ fluxes between the land surface and the atmosphere, delivering highly accurate data on greenhouse gas exchange.
The eddy covariance method is recognised as the most reliable approach under the IPCC guidelines for greenhouse gas inventories (IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories). The measurements are carried out in line with the quality control requirements of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO/GAW) and the ISO 20988:2007 standard (Air quality — Guidelines for estimating measurement uncertainty), which ensure data accuracy, repeatability and international comparability. This approach is also recognised in the SocialCarbon and Gold Standard methodologies as a scientifically sound and verifiable direct measurement method that allows CO₂ fluxes to be assessed objectively in both peat extraction and restoration areas.
At a seminar on 14 November, the company will present this cooperation project, introducing the operating principles of the new device, the possibilities for interpreting the data and its significance in the context of climate change mitigation. The event will also include a discussion on integrating the data into national greenhouse gas inventory processes and on solutions for sustainable resource management in Latvia.
“Direct emissions measurements using eddy covariance technology are a significant step towards scientifically sound and transparent carbon accounting in the peat industry,” says Uldis Ameriks, Chairman of the Board of SIA “Laflora”. “We are proud that the world's first device of this kind has been put to use here in Latvia, strengthening our country's position as a leader in innovation in the sustainable use of natural resources.”
Meanwhile, the University of Latvia's representative Normunds Stivriņš, Professor at the LU Department of Geology, stresses: “Thanks to the support of the LU Foundation and SIA “Mikrotīkls”, we can begin measurements that until now have not been possible in Latvia. This cooperation with businesses allows scientific methods to be applied in real production areas and promotes the accumulation of data needed for emissions inventories at both national and international level and for meeting climate targets.”
To mark the start of this cooperation, a seminar will be held on 14 November at 9.30 a.m. at Kūdras nams in Kalnciems, presenting the eddy covariance measurement method, its operating principles and its potential applications in the Latvian peat industry.
During the seminar, participants will be able to learn more about data interpretation, practical examples of application and the importance of the methodology in implementing climate policy, as well as take part in an inspection and demonstration of the LI-COR Carbon Node tower at the Drabiņi peat bog.
Thanks to a donation from SIA “Mikrotīkls”, which is administered by the LU Foundation (project no. 40022 “Developing CO₂ cycle monitoring in natural and degraded peatlands”), it was possible to purchase the necessary monitoring equipment so that such a measurement system could begin to be introduced in Latvia's peatlands.
