According to the report by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, by the end of 2021, the number of people fleeing war, persecution, and conflict had exceeded 89 million. This figure is 8% higher than the previous year, and in 2022 it already surpassed 100 million.

The vast majority – namely more than 2/3 of all refugees and displaced persons at the end of 2021 – came from (only) five countries, while the 10 "most popular" countries of origin accounted for more than 80% of the global total. As shown in the chart, the largest number of people displaced outside their home country – 6.8 million – is from Syria. Venezuelans make up the second largest population outside their country's borders – 4.6 million, almost all of whom are in the Americas. Recently, 2.7 million displaced Afghans have been counted, which is the third largest number in the world. Meanwhile, violence, food shortages, and deteriorating conditions have forced South Sudanese residents to emigrate; their numbers increased from 2.2 million refugees in 2020 to 2.4 million by the end of 2021, almost all of whom live in Uganda (958,900), Sudan (803,600), Ethiopia (386,800), and Kenya (135,300), according to UNHCR data.
