The annual monitoring of white-tailed eagles has concluded after checking 113 breeding territories across Latvia. The monitoring results indicate that the number of white-tailed eagle occupied nests recorded this year is the highest to date in Latvia.

“Approximately 80% of the Latvian white-tailed eagle population breeds in forests managed by LVM. Of the 113 breeding territories checked this year, occupied nests were confirmed in 98 cases. This is the highest number of occupied nests known to date in Latvia,” says LVM environmental expert Aigars Kalvāns.

During the monitoring, nests were found in 13 new breeding areas in LVM forests, and 14 new nests were located in previously known areas where the birds had switched nests. The majority – 73.5% – of the occupied nests known in LVM forests in 2021 were located in the western part of Latvia – in the Zemgale, Northern Kurzeme and Southern Kurzeme regions. Most of the newly discovered areas (8 out of 13) are also located in the western and central parts – five nests were found in the Southern Kurzeme region, two in Zemgale and one in the Northern Kurzeme region.
