Jyrki Katainen, who served as Vice-President of the European Commission for five years, agrees with critics who point out that both the European Commission and the European Parliament on forest-related issues lack information, knowledge and the opinions of industry experts, which in turn prevents or complicates the protection of the forest industry's interests.
"The view that it is possible to both protect forests and utilise them commercially at the same time is correct and spot on! As the "carbon sink" = volume of cubic metres in forests increases, they are being managed better and better!"
