In order to analyse the economic, social and ecological sustainability of the Latvian forest sector, the University of Latvia (LU), in cooperation with AS “Latvijas Finieris”, has launched a major study intended to produce balanced development scenarios that would foster the sector's sustainable growth and its competitiveness at national and international level.

says Mārtiņš Danusēvičs, the study's scientific supervisor and a lecturer at the University of Latvia Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, underlining the importance of the work now under way.
“Economic development today is no longer conceivable without a data-driven approach that allows strategically considered and long-term effective decisions to be made. A comprehensive study of this kind is a unique opportunity to strengthen the future competitiveness of the Latvian forest sector while taking care of the sustainable management of natural resources. Cooperation with the University of Latvia will not only bring together theoretical knowledge and practical experience, but will also create an opportunity to develop solutions that contribute to transforming Latvia's economic development, thereby fostering the sustainable growth of the Latvian economy as a whole,”

In the project “Economic Assessment of the Balanced Development Potential of the Latvian Forest Sector and Development Scenarios”, the researchers plan to analyse the regulatory framework in force and its impact on the economy and on ecosystem services, to examine international experience in sustainable forestry and adapt it to Latvian conditions, and to model development scenarios that balance economic, ecological and social aspects, ensuring long-term well-being and the conservation of resources for future generations.
The project will result in detailed development scenarios covering a range of approaches, from intensive economic growth through to conservation strategies. In addition, specific recommendations will be offered to policymakers on improving the regulatory framework and drawing up a strategy for the sector.
The findings of the study are due to be presented in the summer of 2025, involving industry experts, policymakers and representatives of the public. A scientific publication is also planned, along with an international conference that would strengthen Latvia's name in the global discussion on sustainable forestry.
