A less discussed topic is our recent history and our encounter with the coveted love – Western capitalism. It was awaited, dreamt of, then it arrived, but it turned out that things were not so simple or good after all. On average, of course, the standard of living has grown significantly over the last 30 years, but that had to be fought for by ourselves. The idea of capitalism and the free market means exactly that – we have to fight for it ourselves. Disappointment has grown into resentment, and prolonged resentment is hard to spot, yet it is highly destructive.
Something similar can be observed in the scientific sector as well. We awaited the West and Europe as a saviour, as a breath of fresh air, but it turns out that there are flies in the ointment there too. Not just the bureaucracy that is growing everywhere, but also ideological convictions. 30 years ago, people looked to the West as liberators, but now they have started to behave strangely. Consequently, I am not surprised that there are many people who now want to distance themselves but cannot find their place. One example is nationalism. Europe considers it outdated, but several Central and Eastern European countries yearn for it. Let us not even mention the other battles of values.
