The start of next year will be very difficult for the entire forestry sector, and it will only be possible to talk about stabilisation or improvement of the situation in the second half of the year, said Pēters Putniņš, Chairman of the Board of AS “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM).

In assessing the prospects for economic development, he predicted that timber prices and LVM's income would grow more slowly than costs in the future.

“Service prices and energy costs are already increasing, as is the need to raise wages in the industry as a whole, for our service providers, and for LVM employees,” explained P. Putniņš, adding that the costs of forestry services in Latvia are also rising and are already approaching the level of the Scandinavian countries.
