Eleven coastal and inland water fishermen from Engure, Mērsrags, and Bērzciems have joined together in the association "Mazjūras zvejnieki", which was officially registered this spring. "It was high time. Now the cup is full and something must be done," says the initiator of the association's founding, a fisherman of several generations and owner of IK "Mazā Kaija", Andris Cīrulis, when we meet with other fishermen at his home in Bērzciems before the traditional Fisherman's Festival; his house has become a temporary meeting place for the new association.
This is only for the time being, as premises will soon be set up for the association's needs in a former fish-processing plant located by the sea opposite the old Bērzciems harbour.
