Saeima unanimously votes to allow Latvian citizens to serve in Ukraine

"Our citizens who wish to support Ukraine and voluntarily go to serve there, in order to defend Ukraine's independence and our collective security, must have the opportunity to do so."

Until now, the law stipulated that it was prohibited for a Latvian citizen to serve in the armed forces, internal troops, military organisations, intelligence or security services, police (militia), or judicial service of a foreign state or other subject of international law, or in those established within their territory. Exceptions were specified for cases of service in the European Union (EU), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, an EU member state, a member state of the European Free Trade Association, a member state of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the Commonwealth of Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, or in the service of a state with which Latvia has concluded an agreement on the recognition of dual citizenship, as well as service that is not considered voluntary in another state of which the person is a citizen (subject), where dual citizenship has been established in accordance with the provisions of the Citizenship Law.
