To mitigate the negative impact of the war in Ukraine on food prices, Europe must increase food production this year and consider the possibility of temporarily waiving certain environmental requirements and biofuel blending mandates, said Valdis Dombrovskis (JV), Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Trade.

He stated that the European Commission has carried out an assessment of food supply security, concluding that the European Union is not at risk of food supply problems as Europe is largely self-sufficient in staple food products, but such supply issues could occur in a number of developing countries. Therefore, thought must be given to how assistance can be provided to these nations. At the same time, the European Union may have to face the negative social consequences of rising food prices. (...)
