Non-financial objectives approved for Rīgas Meži

To ensure the interests of the local government and the residents of Riga are met, and to promote the development of Rīgas Meži, the company's specific non-financial objectives have been developed and approved. These determine action in four areas: sustainable management of the company's territories (forests, protected nature areas, parks); public education and awareness-raising regarding the environment and the preservation of natural values; human resource development at Rīgas Meži; and the use of modern technologies for operational efficiency, research, and development.

Specific non-financial objectives for Rīgas Meži approved by the Riga City Council on 12 January 2022:

1. Sustainable management of the territories under the administration of SIA Rīgas Meži (forests, specially protected nature areas, gardens, and parks) based on an assessment of biological diversity, as well as economic and social values. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to:

1.1. promote biodiversity, enhance landscape value, and preserve cultural and historical values in gardens and parks;

1.2. increase the recreational value of forests and support the conservation of dominant species, forest habitats, and their characteristic species diversity;

1.3. use forest management methods that ensure carbon sequestration and an annual increase in stocks in forest stands, through monitoring, the use of sensitive forest management approaches in areas with a high concentration of social and natural values, and stable timber harvesting based on an economically sound sustainable use model in forests with a low concentration of social and natural values.

2. Effective implementation of environmental education programmes. To achieve this objective, it is necessary to:

2.1. promote understanding of forest ecosystems, their economic and social significance, and sustainable management of forests, gardens, and parks;

2.2. provide modern environmental education that aligns with international trends and good practice, taking into account current global and local environmental threats;

2.3. consistently monitor visitor habits and views on the environment and biodiversity;

2.4. cooperate with residents, neighbourhood associations, and other stakeholders by organising surveys and events to educate on environmental values and promote visits to forests, gardens, and parks.

3. Development of employees' professional competence by increasing qualifications, motivation, and the quality of the work environment.

4. Strengthening capacity in the fields of research, development, and digitalisation, including, where possible, participating in smart city solution and innovation ecosystem projects, as well as cooperating with the Riga city municipality in the development and implementation of centralised ICT solutions and the provision of open data.

The non-financial objectives of Rīgas Meži were determined based on the company's strategic goal: "To sustainably manage nature territories owned by the municipality in order to achieve the preservation and increase of biodiversity, carbon sequestration and accumulation, the increase and utilisation of economic and social values, and to ensure the management of municipal gardens, parks, squares, and other urban environmental objects in order to increase their accessibility, natural and cultural-historical value, and the comfort of residents", as well as on documents regulating the activities of municipalities and their capital companies.
