To ensure global warming does not exceed the 2 °C limit set by the Paris Agreement, emissions must peak by 2025.

According to data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the window to limit global warming to a relatively safe level is rapidly closing. On 4 April, the IPCC published a new report spanning nearly 3,000 pages. It emerged following two weeks of negotiations among representatives from 195 governments to agree on the best way to reflect the "state of play" of climate science. The report's conclusions are not encouraging. To achieve the goals set out in the Paris Agreement—namely, to limit the rise in global average temperatures to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, and, if that fails, to 2 °C—immediate and unprecedented action from every country will be required.
