According to Stora Enso, the forestry sector now has a practical tool it can use to promote biodiversity more effectively. Working with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Newcastle University, Stora Enso has developed a model in which active forest management has an overall positive effect on biodiversity.

The model combines the reduction of threats to species and their restoration with a biodiversity indicator developed by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, which Stora Enso uses in its forestry decision-making. It makes it possible to prioritise the long-term impact of biodiversity measures at the forest landscape level, so that the most urgent threats to biodiversity can be addressed quickly and effectively without interrupting timber production.

"The forestry sector now has a practical tool that will allow it to promote biodiversity more effectively than before," Stora Enso sustainability manager Toby Croucher says in a press release.
