To reduce forest fragmentation and promote biodiversity in Rāzna National Park, the Nature Conservation Agency (the Agency) has begun planning for the naturalisation of forests in Andzeļi parish, Krāslava municipality. Currently, in this area, fragmented forest stands containing identified natural values are adjacent to planted, uniform spruce stands of significantly lower biological value.
In the coming months, mechanical methods will be used in the Obitelis forest stands of Andzeļi parish to facilitate forest naturalisation. Specifically, natural disturbances such as windthrow and stem breakage will be simulated to create gaps. This will diversify light conditions and, in the long term, encourage the development of multi-aged stands and the emergence of structures equivalent to natural forest habitats.
