Audupe is a distributary on the right bank of the Daugava, connecting the mighty waters of the Daugava with the gentle ripples of Vecdaugava. To the north of Audupe lies Mangaļsala, to the south is Vecmīlgrāvis, while Vecdaugava washes the shores of Vecāķi and the Vecdaugava neighbourhood. Until approximately the middle of the 16th century, the Daugava flowed into the sea via the Vecdaugava riverbed, but as time passed and ice jams caused significant erosion, the current riverbed was formed. By the 17th century, Vecdaugava had completely lost its importance as a shipping route for merchant vessels and slowly began to fade into obscurity. Initially, several distributaries connected Vecdaugava and the Daugava, but these were filled in, leaving Audupe as the only remaining distributary to this day.
