As Sweden considers joining NATO, it is strengthening defences on the island of Gotland, a well-known and popular holiday destination for Swedes in the Baltic Sea.

Gotland is known as an island with unspoilt nature and sandy beaches; it has long been a popular holiday destination for many Swedes. Viking Age settlements and picturesque rock formations attract more than two million visitors every year, who wish to enjoy the peace and simplicity of island life.

A little over three decades ago, this holiday destination served a completely different purpose. Gotland was located just 300 kilometres from the home of the Soviet Baltic Fleet, and it served as a primary deterrent against Soviet expansion. (...)
