The “Augšzeme” protected landscape area is located in the south-eastern part of Latvia, in the territory of Daugavpils and Ilūkste municipalities; this protected nature area was established in 1977 to preserve a landscape of high value. One of the main nature conservation values is the lakes located within the territory, such as Lake Svente and Lake Medumi.
