The remediation of the sulphuric acid tar-contaminated ponds in Inčukalns is the most ambitious and technically challenging project of its kind and scale ever implemented in Latvia. We have achieved successful results through the collaboration of many involved parties: the entrepreneurs who implemented innovations specifically adapted to the nature of this project and responsibly addressed the unpredictable complications that inevitably arise in such projects, as well as the state institutions that jointly oversaw the project's progress and finances, remaining open to both technological and management innovations. Today, there is satisfaction with the work completed, along with the conviction that 21st-century society much better understands and acknowledges the impact of its economic activities on the environment, and that the emergence of such ecological disasters would no longer be possible.
