Since the end of last year, a research project titled New Discoveries of Hillforts in Latvia 2018–2021: Cultural-Historical Significance, led by Juris Urtāns and funded by the Latvian Council of Science, has been underway at the Latvian Academy of Culture. Since 2018, at least 42 hillforts have been identified as new discoveries, which is far more than in the entire period since the Second World War combined, and the number of discoveries is likely to grow further, as almost every week reports arrive from ancient history enthusiasts regarding potential, previously unknown hillforts in Latvia – on LIDAR land relief maps, they appear as suspicious modifications to the earth's surface, resembling ancient fortifications. Within the framework of the project, the identification of new hillforts and the processing and compilation of the obtained data will continue, resulting in the preparation of a monograph by the end of the year, in order to include these new discoveries in the cultural landscape circulation of Latvia and the Baltic region as quickly as possible. It is also intended to prepare documentation for the potential inclusion of the newly discovered hillforts in the list of state-protected cultural monuments.

In recent weeks, both in the Saeima and the Cabinet of Ministers, the thesis has been heard once again: “We must act this way, otherwise there will be penalties, infringement procedures, etc.” Often, such a pseudo-argument completely excludes reasonable disputes, discussions, or alternatives, forcing those responsible to make decisions hastily and not always in the interests of Latvia. Why is that?
