The forestry sector is the only one that essentially ensures the sequestration of greenhouse gases

If forestry is destroyed, long-term climate change mitigation goals cannot be achieved. This is a fundamental postulate which, in my understanding, is very important to remember. In Latvia, the ways in which the state plans to move towards climate change mitigation are largely summarised in the National Energy and Climate Plan for 2021–2030.

What do we see in it? The forestry sector is intended as a driving force that will ensure an increase in sequestration. At the same time, the document points out that the forest has an important function in maintaining biodiversity and sustainable management. There are no such conditions for other sectors; for example, there is no requirement that house insulation should only use materials obtained from renewable resources using sustainable methods.
