The fishing opportunity restrictions proposed by the European Commission for 2022 in the Baltic Sea are stricter than those recommended by scientists. Latvia certainly cannot support the European Commission's proposal not to increase the catch of sprat stocks in 2022, which would be permissible according to scientific advice. Furthermore, restrictions necessary for herring fishing cannot serve as a prohibition on utilising fishing opportunities for sprat stocks that are in a very good state. Likewise, the reduction in the herring catch limit proposed by the European Commission by more than half within a single year is more than excessive when assessing the negative impact of such a decision on the fishing industry.
