The European Parliament (EP) has given the green light to a directive that will improve product labelling and ban misleading claims regarding environmental protection.

Last week, the EP adopted a directive aimed at protecting consumers from misleading marketing practices and helping them make better choices when shopping. To achieve this, several new undesirable marketing habits will be added to the European Union's list of banned commercial practices, such as greenwashing and the shortening of product lifespans. The new rules require that information provided on product labels be made clearer and more reliable. It is prohibited to use unproven generalised environmental claims on labels, such as environmentally friendly, natural, biodegradable, climate-neutral or eco-friendly.
